Free agency, transfers and the weeks after the season can be a little scary for sports fans. It means your team could make a big signing, trade players to start rebuilding or let a star player go without getting anything back. 2016 has been a very surprising year with lots of stars making a move to different teams. The NBA free agency period was one of the craziest, with players getting huge contracts and others deciding to move to other teams. Football has also had a number of surprising moves and we could see more in the next few days. The two sports will be very interesting to watch this year as many teams have made big signings to win it all. Here are the most surprising signings of 2016:
The NBA had at least five other surprising moves during free agency but one of the most surprising was Dwyane Wade joining the Chicago Bulls. Yes, he was born in Chicago and in the past, rumors had said the team was interested in signing him. But he had played for the Miami Heat so long that fans thought he would eventually agree to sign with the team again, just like he had done the year before. This year was different, the Miami Heat made an offer but other teams were offering more, including the Chicago Bulls.
To many, this was probably the most surprising signing of the NBA free agency period. Kevin Durant met with few teams but many believed he would return to the Thunder, where he was one game away from reaching the NBA Finals last season. But he decided to join the Golden State Warriors, a team that was already one of the favorites to return to the NBA Finals next season. The surprising decision was not well received by some Thunder fans, who burned his jersey and sneakers. The Thunder still have Russell Westbrook but he has one year remaining on his contract and many believe he will not sign an extension. This has led to a number of rumors on the teams that could trade for him soon.
Mike Conley is a really good point guard but some basketball fans were surprised to see that he had agreed with the Grizzlies on the richest contract in NBA history. The max contract, worth $153 million, was just the start for the Grizzlies during free agency. The team later agreed to a four-year, $94.8 million max contract with Chandler Parsons.
Two months ago, Bayern Munich announced the signing of Mats Hummels. The star central defender had actually played for Bayern Munich years ago but rumors had mentioned a move for so long that it surprised a few when it was announced. This isn’t the first time a star moves from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich in recent years, Lewandowski and Gotze have also done the same. Borussia Dortmund did bring back Gotze, who signed a four-year contract a few days ago.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic confirmed that he would leave PSG at the end of the season. Rumors mentioned a return to AC Milan or a move to MLS. But he joined Manchester United, a team that could complete a world record transfer for Paul Pogba in just a few hours. In the past, rumors had mentioned that the Swedish legend would finish his career in the MLS, but it looks like he will try to win the EPL trophy next season.
Dani Alves surprised football fans after signing a two-year deal at Juventus after a free transfer from Barcelona. The star right back won so many trophies with Barcelona and many didn’t see this move coming. He later admitted that he left Barcelona because it became too easy to play for them. Juventus is a great club but many didn’t see Dani Alves leaving one of the best rosters in football.
Last month, Hulk joined Shanghai SIPG in a very surprising move, which broke a few records. The Chinese Super League has made a number of surprising moves recently but this is one of the biggest so far. Hulk will earn £320,000 ($419,632) a week, making him one of the highest earning players in world football.
2016 has been an interesting year for NBA free agency and football league transfers, with big contracts and surprising moves. Trade and world record transfer rumors have not stopped, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a few more soon.
