There are so many waterfalls around the world but the highest is in Venezuela. The waterfall, located in the Canaima National Park, is one of the top tourist attractions in Venezuela but it is not easy to make it there. All of the flights and wait are worth it though as it is not only the world’s highest waterfall, but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here are ten interesting facts about the Angel Falls:

  • The Angel Falls is the world’s highest waterfall, with a height of 3,212 feet. The height number includes part of the rapids below the drop.
  • In Spanish, the waterfall is called Salto Angel. The Angel Falls name comes from Jimmie Angel, who was the first person to fly over it in 1933.
  • The first person that spotted the mountain and waterfall is said to be Ernesto Sanchez La Cruz, a Venezuelan explorer. He spotted them in 1912 but it is not known exactly if he was the first as he never mentioned his discovery.
  • Angel returned four years later but the wheels of his plane were damaged after landing on the mountain. Angel and the three people that visited had to descend down the mountain, which took them more than ten days.
  • His plane stayed at the top of the mountain for 33 years. It was then lifted by a helicopter and restored. It now sits on the front of the airport in Ciudad Bolivar.
  • The Angel Falls is a top tourist attraction but it is not easy to get there. It is located in a jungle and tourists first have to take a flight from Ciudad Bolivar or Puerto Ordaz to reach the camp.
  • The official height was determined 67 years ago.
  • In 1968 and 1969, climbers attempted to reach the top but the first climb was actually completed two years later. It took the climbers more than nine days to reach the top.
  • The Salto Angel name appeared on a Venezuelan government map six years after Jimmie Angel flew over the waterfalls.
  • During the dry season, some of the water evaporates before it even touches the ground. It is also said that under certain conditions, people can feel the tiny water drops from one kilometer away.
